HAIL…the aftermath

I don’t garden as a hobby. I garden to try and make hubs and I a little more self sustainable. Train us for the small acreage we dream of having. And generally for pride is seeing the fruits (and vegetables) of our labour.
Cue the heartless being that mother nature is. She brought down some fury last night. She effectively shattered our labour of love. She has effectively ticked me off!
I am heartbroken. Defeated. Insert all expletives here.
We are now gambling on what plants survive.
That was the hail. Seas of pea size hail fell from the sky with such force we couldn’t hear ourselves right next to each other. Then the larger hail came with equal force. Over and over again.
And today we surveyed the damage.
And this is what I salvaged, or begrudgingly put to rest for compost. Some of the veggies cut down when they just had started. *sigh* more farmers market trips instead of garden foraging.

on:This week has been unbelievably hot. Dare I say it is the first bit of true summer weather we have received. Dry 30C heat. Cloyingly hot. The house has not been below 26 all week except today when it has finally clouded over. Perhaps tonight I can sleep!
This week has been:
Dog days of summer?
New plants acquired. This Pussy Willow was on sale at the local gardening centre.
Tying back errant snap peas
This melon plant was also on sale. Never tried but J is convinced we can grow some. If this weather continues he may be right. 🙂
More peppers!
Strawberry blossoms. I hope the birds don’t get the berries before we do.
The 4 year old chive plant that comes back very year.
Using grass clippings to combat the number of weeds.
Catnip!
A bit of vintage reading in the sun.
A BBQ burger with cheese, and prosciutto. Nom nom nom.
A lovely pair of glass salt and pepper shakers given to me by my boss.
And my own personal mountain of paperwork that the gardening provides solace from.
Hope everyone has had a wonderful week.
Silent Sunday I’m still here.

It’s some sort of beginning
Posted May 22, 2012
on:It’s May long in AB which means planting. I would of loved to plant earlier, but anything other than bulbs doesn’t survive the “surprise” AB weather. It snows.
So after a few hours of random planting we have a few things to show in the newly dug back gardens. It gets better with time.
